Brendan Smith, a graduating senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in biology and computer science, participated in the 2018-2019 Russian Overseas Flagship at Kazakh National University in Almaty. He reports here on his internship at the Institute for Plant Biology and Biotechnology where he focused on mapping the genome of varieties of barley important to agriculture in Central Asia.
